Mercedes-Benz Transmission Types

There are a large variety of transmission types in modern cars today, rather than just stick-shift or traditional automatics of the past. Let's Explore some of the most common transmission types.

WHAT TRANSMISSION TYPES ARE AVAILABLE IN MODERN CARS?

Manual Transmission (MT)
The standard transmission where gears are changed manually by the driver with a gear selector and clutch

Traditional Automatic Transmission
Traditional automatics use a torque converter and hydraulic fluid to transfer power from the engine to the transmission. Gear shifting is automated and there is no clutch.

Tiptronic Transmission
A tiptronic is a type of automatic transmission that allows for fully automatic gear shifting or manual gear shifting by the driver. Tiptronics use a torque converter rather than a clutch.

Automatic Manual Transmission (AM)
Automatic Manual or Automated Manual transmission is similar to a manual transmission- but gear and clutch action is computer automated.

Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT)
A dual clutch transmission has two gear shafts with a clutch for each. The dual system allows for faster and smoother gear changes.

Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG)
This type of transmission is similar to the Dual Clutch, but the DSG disengages the secondary clutch that is not in use.

Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT)
The Continuously Variable Transmission does not use gears. CVT utilizes a belt, pulleys and sensors to “change gears”. Without actual gears, the acceleration is smooth without any pauses in gear changes.

WHAT MERCEDES TRANSMISSION TYPES ARE AVAILABLE?

Since the 1990's, Mercedes-Benz have used Tiptronic transmission technology in their cars. The current version, the 9G-Tronic nine-speed automatic transmission, was introduced in 2013. In tiptronic transmission, the routine shifting of gears is controlled by a computer but the driver can override the automatic controls. Previous transmissions in Benzes include the 7G-Tronic, 5G-Tronic and the older 4G-Tronic.

WHAT ARE THE PROS AND CONS OF MERCEDES TRANSMISSIONS?

Tiptronic technology is favored by many as it allows for both automatic and manual driving styles. Novice drivers are able to benefit from automated gear shifting, while experienced drivers can enjoy full control of gear shifting. Gear shifting is also faster than in a traditional manual transmission since there is no clutch.

Tiptronic transmission also transmits more torque than Continuously Variable Transmission, allowing for faster acceleration. Diamler, the manufacturer of the 9G-tronic, boasts lower fuel consumption, improved emissions, smoother gear shifting and lightweight construction in this nine speed version as compared to its predecessors. According to Diamler- “the 9G-TRONIC converts a very high proportion of the engine power into tractive power”

While this transmission is favored by many, some drivers feel that the gear transition may not be as smooth as in Continuously Variable Transmission where gears are completely replaced by the CVT belt.
